This may be my last post but it is not the end of the journey. I have learned a lot through this process and don't plan to stop learning just because we are nearing the end of the semester. I see this little piece of dirt as a blank canvas for painting season after season. My boys will learn so much from this little piece of dirt as well. My son has been obsessed with planting brussel sprouts. Well, this prompted me to make a new rule. If you plant it, you eat it. So, we will see if he eats what he plants. I know I will.
This is my "finished" product. I decided to make a stepped garden. The steps were already there I simply defined them with the boards. This will help keep the dirt in place and as I amend further and add more to the levels they will not spill over into each other. I have had so much fun learning about everything. My biggest aha was learning about soil and how to amend it. I was amazed at how much my soil really needed. My students learn that plants need water, sun, soil and air. Well, what we don't teach our students is that there are different things that affect our plants. Is our water, soil, or air contaminated or depleted of nutrients? Well, now I can teach them about that also.
I cannot just update my page and it stops. Tune in next semester for more. Here is a list of future plans.
- Make a bean pole house
- Gate off the garden
- Put in irrigation
- Make a keyhole vegetable garden
- And much much more
