A short summary of the collaborative work accomplished for this phase I am again impressed with the synergy which our group exhibits when working collaboratively. This week we again met on Google Hangouts and worked on our project while talking live. At this point we have each established our fortes and naturally ask one another to complete things as needed. Angelica is a great project monitor and we all work together to make sure that we are following directions appropriately. Part 3 was not difficult for us at all. As we were evaluating our ideas the three of us agreed with the ideas that were selected. I believe that this worked out this way because we feel very passionately about Biliteracy and believe in this project. One of my favorite things about how my group collaborates is that we trust each others’ decisions and opinions. We don’t spend a lot of time negotiating what we are going to say. Someone writes something and it makes sense to all of us and we truly do agree. Your individual contribution to this week's work For this stage of the design thinking process I contributed in a variety of ways both with my ideas and with technology support. We were tasked to collaboratively list 100 ideas. We divided the work in three and I wrote my ideas in the format which we decided. As stated above, we have found our fortes and this helps us when delegating work. My special task is to create and share the Popplet document which we used. Together we meticulously read the directions and make sure that we are following them as necessary. During this process I help either by rereading, clarifying, or negotiating if what we have done follows what the directions are asking us to do. For our Prezi presentation I was in charge of picking two ideas to illustrate and I created the slides for these ideas. Challenges the group or you as an individual faced This week my group continued to work well together. We met in person, on Google Hangouts, and texted when needed. When we are collaborating we all go to the shared document which we are working on and we work on it as we talk. We did encounter a few challenges this week. One of our members teaches at a year round school and she returned to work and I was out of town in Mexico. Both of these challenges didn’t stop us from getting our work done effectively. We planned ahead and met before both of these challenges happened and when we met afterward we already knew where what our plan was for the week. This strategy worked well except I had limited internet access in Mexico. Next time, would you do anything differently to better the process? I truly don’t feel that there is anything I would do differently next time I am in the ideation phase of a design thinking project. I feel that my group has worked very well together and I feel very positive about this process. How would you apply this process with students or colleagues at your site? In order to maximize the success of this process with my students and my staff I would share what I have done in order to give them ideas about what tools they can use. I would then share how my group has collaborated and encourage them to get on the same page as early in the process as possible so that this third stage develops smoothly. I would then check in on them periodically in order to make myself available for questions and support. What traditional and non-traditional characteristics of creativity are reflected in the Ideation Phase? When working on this phase the characteristics of creativity were very apparent. This week we learned that creativity is “a technique for producing ideas” and that ideas come to life because of already existing ideas that we already have (Leu 2015). In order to complete this third stage of the design thinking process we had to dig down deep into our old ideas and experiences in order to come up with the best ideas to include in our brainstorm. I believe that we naturally did this but now we know what to call the process. We also know that creativity isn’t always associated with art. This week our creativity came through in the form of ideas, technology, collaboration, and visual aids. Reflection#2 A short summary of the collaborative work accomplished for this phase This week my group continued to collaborate well and creatively. We were able to meet once in person but we had a little bit of difficulty meeting after that. Instead of our meetings in person we texted, met on the community which we created on google+, emailed, and commented on our shared document. We delegated work more than we did for week one specifically because each of us was reflecting and creating visuals about the people which we interviewed. We added to our shared document, created a padlet, and used the sticky note activity in order to follow all of the points on our checklist. Your individual contribution to this week's work I wasn’t able to complete my interview with a parent last week so that was my first task of the week. I created a visual about this person for our story, participated in the sticky activity, edited as needed, added information to our shared document, created events on our google+ community for collaboration, and provided feedback for the Design Thinking process. I enjoyed this week’s process a little bit more than last week. I found it very rewarding to learn about another parent’s point of view and to look for themes which stood out between individuals which we interviewed. Challenges the group or you as an individual faced Even though we work very well together we did encounter a couple of challenges. This week it was more difficult to be at the same place at the same time. We did manage to meet once in person but the rest of our collaboration was done online. Also, I had some social events, which is atypical, and I found that I was a bit more distracted than normal. I had to find times in between events and during the day to complete my homework assignments. Next time, would you do anything differently to better the process? I am hoping that for the coming weeks we are able to meet more often or at least on Google Hangouts and for a longer period of time. I wouldn’t change anything about the collaboration that we do digitally. We work well together online and we are always willing to do our fair share. When something is needed we are not shy about informing the person whose part it is that it needs to be done. That person always makes the changes on a timely fashion and all is well after that. How would you apply this process with students or colleagues at your site? I can only imagine what this process would look like in my classroom and at my school site with teachers. I believe that my students would be excited to share out about a person or theme which they have explored. They would be eager to document their findings on a poster board so that the class could find similarities together. Adults on the other hand might have a more difficult time feeling excited to share out. In order to train my students I would pick a topic which they are very excited to talk about in order to help them become even more excited. This might also work with the teachers. What 8 tenets of critical thinking were evident or relevant to this process? (Refer to the Critical Thinking lecture) The tenets of critical thinking which were most evident or essential for the work that my group did this week are open mindedness, deferred judgement, questioning, and reflection. For this week’s process I completed my interview and was tasked to analyze the information which we had gathered. I found that open mindedness was helpful when learning more about Mr. Hernandez and his opposition to enrolling his children in a Biliteracy program. I found myself reflecting when I read over all of the interviews and throughout this Design Thinking process I feel that I have been questioning every question, every answer, every suggestion, and also myself throughout this process. It has been a very rewarding week. Watch the video or read my post
