Non-Negotiables for Highly Effective Leaders
I believe that in order to fine tune my school into the best school in the universe there are certain non-negotiables that must be established. When I am in charge of my school I plan on implementing the following core non-negotiables into my leadership style.
1. Mutual Respect between staff, students, parents, and others within the district.
I have worked at my school site for eight years now and throughout the years I have been exposed to a variety of experiences that have shaped my belief system. As a leader I consider mutual respect a must. Even though it ultimately is about the kids it is impossible for everyone to do what is best for the students at my school if we don’t all respect each other.
2. Listen attentively
Listening attentively is must if you are going to demonstrate respect towards others. This very important skill tells the speaker that they are important enough for you to stop for a moment and listen to them. When you are listening attentively you are conveying a message of respect.
3. Open door policy
When I am a school leader I will have an open door policy in place. If someone needs to speak with me they should be able to do so. This policy would apply to parents, teachers, and students. I believe that I cannot have an open door policy if I am not practicing Listen attentively.
4. Build relationships with all stakeholders-
I am a people person. It is natural for me to build relationships with others (all stakeholders). But I know that not everyone can do that. As a leader it is very important to establish that sense of community.
5. Fair and equitable
This is a very touchy subject for me. I believe that we all work in a situation where we give a lot of ourselves. It is easy for anyone or a few of the stakeholders to take advantage of us. There have been times when I observe inequities happening. I believe that because we are all bound by the same contract our leader should work hard in order to establish a fair and equitable workplace. Teachers should work the same amount of minutes/hours for the same protections of the same contract.
6. Speak up for kids
When you see ANYTHING that you don’t agree with that has to do with kids you must speak up. It doesn’t matter who you need to speak to in order to get your point across and therefore gain results you MUST do it. If you cannot get the outcome that you believe is most beneficial to the specific child then you must go to the next person. Children cannot speak up for themselves and therefore it is our responsibility to do it for them. for Highly
