The book Why School? by Will Richardson really got me thinking about the question, why school? I began to imagine a world without schools as they currently exist. I have plenty of reasons why I believe that schools are good and should continue to serve their part in our society. Despite what politicians say, schools rule!

I believe in the idea of school for all and do not think that privatizing schools is what is best for kids. I am completely committed to the New School way of doing things. I am not quite sure how to start and where the road will take me but that is why I have chose to embark on a Masters in Technology. I believe that when I am done with this Masters program I will be well on my way to New School implementation and advocacy. The system is flawed we just need to know what do in order to fix it. For now I can add some technological bling to the current Old School. It c Just like I am committed to the New School I am also committed to unlearning/relearning. Fifteen years ago I got my first cellphone and my first computer all at once. since then technology has smacked me in the face time and time again. I have had no other option but to unlearn/relearn as it does. I am willing and committed to all six of Richardson's unlearn/relearn ideas. 1. Share everything (or at least something) 2. Discover, don't deliver the curriculum 3. Talk to strangers 4. Be a master Learner 5. Do real work for real audiences 6. Transfer the power They all make for the type of classroom that I would like to have one day. Some of the abovementioned ideas might be easier than others but I have faith that I am setting myself, and my students, up for success by acquiring more technological knowledge. |
